MISUNDERSTOOD
Most people race from the ferry in Harwich through Essex: on the way to where it's really beautiful. "And that's such a pity", Anne Cohen, hostess of Woodview Cottage in Ramsey, thinks. "The neighbourhood is beautiful" according to Johan and Nell Gelderblom from Schoonhoven. They recently stayed at Woodview and warmly recommend this address. "It's a small B&B: one room, but it's not at all bad. Furthermore the guests have a dining room for their own private use. There's a washing machine in the bathroom, which is especially practical for people who want to stay longer than one night." Warm-hearted Anne, who started this B&B in April, sincerely hopes that people will start to see more in Ramsey then just 'a 10 minutes from the ferry-location'. "There is so much scenic beauty here, so much history".
Curiosities: Anne has 4 "diamonds" from the British B&B organization. And such a classification is very good for somebody who has only just started. Anne: "I keep it small deliberately. I want the people to feel at home: a lot of privacy therefore."
About the environment: It starts already with the garden at Woodview. The forest that backs on to the garden (chestnuts) were planted by the Romans. Nearby there's the sanctuary: a Mecca for birdwatchers. The river Stour is one of the most beautiful rivers of England. The 18th-century painter John Constable was inspired by it to a large number of paintings. Therefore the area is now called the "Constable Country". In the small village Dedham is a nice arts and crafts centre with a toy museum. And not far from Ramsey is the old - original Roman - town Colchester with among others its Castle and modern and old shops.
